It’s been awhile since I’ve posted to Substack, but that’s due to some good news: I have an essay forthcoming in Current Affairs magazine! The piece is about Jean-Luc Godard and his impact on American cinema and it will appear online and in print later this month.
Working on this essay was a very rewarding experience, the exact kind of experience I was hoping to manifest by starting a writing practice through Substack. (I just didn’t expect to land something so soon!) As a result, I’ve fallen out of practice with posting here, so I’m going to recalibrate a bit moving forward. Instead of spending a bunch of time on one “sneak preview” packed with micro-features and posting on a set schedule, I’m going to post micro-features and essays as individual posts as they’re finished. This will also allow me the flexibility to pursue more freelance pieces that I can plug on this platform and hopefully keep the content flowing a bit more freely than it is now.
As for my forthcoming publication, “Godard without the Politics,” I’m planning to share a link as soon as it’s available. In the meantime, I’d highly recommend checking out the Current Affairs website and subscribing to their glorious print edition. The magazine is funded entirely by subscriptions and donations (which means no pesky advertisers), and, unlike many other magazines, Current Affairs actually pays its writers for their work. I’ve been a subscriber for two years now, which makes contributing to their November/December edition feel extra special. I can’t wait to share it with you all!
Stay tuned,
Ryan
